About the site

Q: WTF is the point of this place?!

A: I’m often trying different things within my webspace from time to time, so this answer may be outdated eventually, but right now I’m just showcasing some of my favourite moments from some of my favourite games. It’s kind of like a video archive of gaming memories for me, although it could also be used to provide pointers for people who are playing through the games I cover…

Q: How do you decide which games to capture?

A: At the moment I’m just capturing the games that mean something to me as a gamer; those titles that change my perceptions of what a game can do. If I run out of favourites, maybe I’ll just start capturing new purchases or something. We’ll see.

Q: What do you use for your captures?

A: I use a Dazzle Video Creator Platinum; you can get them for about £50-60 from places such as Amazon, but you’ll also need a male-male 3-phono lead (those red, white and yellow jobbies) and three RCA splitters (one male->two female.) I also bought a new tower PC specifically for my capturing (HP Pavilion Slimline s5306uk-p, £550), but in truth the Dazzle isn’t too demanding on hardware.

In addition to the Pinnacle Studio software bundled with the DVC Platinum, I also use a piece of software called AmCap. Pinnacle Studio can sometimes have trouble capturing 60hz images, displaying them in monochrome or with no sound, but if you change the filter settings in AmCap whilst Pinnacle Studio is recording, you can revert to a normal picture. I also use Windows Movie Maker for trimming and compressing clips.

Q: You bought a whole new PC just for one purpose?

A: I know, I know, but my laptop almost died trying to record an emulator running Nights Into Dreams using Hypercam. I figured that I should do things properly if I want to get anywhere. That said, at a shade over £600 this webby project has been more expensive than most… :P

Q: Who was involved in the making of the website?

A: I bought the domain and webspace, and the host tools include a simple WordPress installation. I also upload the captures to my own YouTube account and write the text in each website update. Credit also goes out to Joe (http://pixelcult.co.uk), Michelle (http://pioneerproject.net) and Murray (http://www.matmurray.com) for evangelising the benefits of WordPress, and to Rev (http://www.andrewrevell.co.uk) for giving me a crash course in its usage.
